Mineralogy of Manganese Ore: Beneficiation and Beyond: MSK's Solution to African Mine

Introduction:

At Mitra S.K. Private. Limited. (MSK), we continually strive to deliver in-depth knowledge-based solutions to our clients. Our recent advancements in the mineralogy of Manganese set a guideline for mines, especially in the field of beneficiation of low-grade ore. This case study explores the journey, challenges, and breakthroughs of our R&D efforts.

Background:

The mineralogy of manganese ore is complex, containing several oxidation states of Manganese. Understanding this mineralogy is crucial for developing effective beneficiation techniques to enhance the ore's quality and subsequent utilization. Recognizing these challenges, our R&D team embarked on a mission to develop in-depth research that would address them and improve overall efficiency.

The Team:

  • Dr. Arijit Goswami: Lead Scientist with 10 years of experience in metallurgical analysis
  • Dr. Satirtha Sengupta: R&D Chemist specializing in spectroscopic techniques.
  • Ms. Alakta Saha: Lab chemist with 15 years' experience.

Problem Statement:

The client wanted to understand possible applications of different grades of Manganese ore obtained from a mine in Africa.

Approach:

The team adopted a systematic approach to tackle the problem:

  1. Literature Review:
    • Studied existing methods of analysis and beneficiation techniques.
    • Studied geological aspects.
  2. Chemical Characterization:
    • Different grades of ores were chemically characterized for elemental compositions.
    • Different phases were studied by powder XRD.

Comments by the team:

  • Dr. Arijit Goswami shares, "Our goal was to identify and quantify the major and minor elements followed by phase analysis to enable us to predict the possible applications including beneficiation."
  • Dr. Satirtha Sengupta adds, "The breakthrough came after comprehensive mineralogical studies. It was a collective effort, and seeing the results was immensely satisfying."
  • Alakta Saha recounts, "We wanted to explore every detail of mineralogical characterization, and it feels great when we ended up with such a detailed study."

Results:

For low-grade Manganese ore: Beneficiation through gravity concentration method will be feasible to upgrade Mn% and eliminate Quartz to reduce Silica%. The Concentrated Manganese Ore Fines can be utilized after agglomeration for Ferro and Silico Manganese production.

For higher-grade Manganese ore: Metallurgical use in both Ferro Manganese or Silico manganese production. In the Chemical Industry, it can be used if slightly higher Silica can be adjusted.

Impact:

Our innovative testing protocol enabled the mining sector to develop a beneficiation strategy based on chemistry. The detailed mineralogical study took into account the roles of both predominant and trace metals for strategizing an apt beneficiation process.
